Our History

EOMS began life as 'The Eastleigh Orchestral and Operatic Society' in 1935 - a society created to perform Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas.

The society was formed after a public meeting, at which local shop proprietor Charles Howe and customer Bert Bishop were elected Secretary and Producer/Musical Director respectively.

After a year of preparations, a 4 - night run of the society's first production - 'The Mikado' - was performed at the Eastleigh Town Hall on 8th February 1937.

The Town Hall (pictured left) was built on Leigh Road in 1899, and was enlarged to include a concert hall in 1928.

In 1958, the society expanded it's performance repertoire into musical plays and became 'Eastleigh Operatic and Musical Society'. It continues to this day to perform a wide range of both musicals and Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas.

Eastleigh Council made a successful bid for one of the first National Lottery grants, and the Town Hall was converted to become The Point Theatre in 1996, forming the new home of the society.
